What a way to end the season! The Reds certainly saved their best til last and local rivals Holmes Chapel were completely blown away down at St Mary's on Sunday.
After weathering some early Holmes Chapel pressure the Reds slowly began to get to grips with their opponents and on 11mins the deadlock was broken. Jake Morgan's inch perfect pass inside the fullback put Chris Hough through on the keeper and he kept ice cool, curling the ball inside the far post superbly. 5mins later it was 2-0, this time Gareth Jones supplying the killer pass to Morgo whose shot went in off the post - 2 chances and two great finishes. Mitch Bailey got in on the act on 25mins to put the Reds out of sight at 3-0. Great work by the impressive Tom Brain in the build up to this one and Mitch used all his strength to hold off the centre half before hammering home his 16th of the season. Half-time 3-0.
Middlewich were in complete control and Holmes Chapel could do nothing to stem the red tide. With the 3 points in the bag the Reds were really enjoying being out there and some of the football they played was a joy to watch. We didn't have to wait long for the 4th goal and after Holmes Chapel failed to clear their lines Connor Gillett struck the ball beautifully with his left foot from the edge of the box and, through a crowded goal mouth, it arrowed into the bottom corner of the net. It was 5-0 2mins later and this was a real cracker. Tom again started things off and Connor and Ben Breeze were both involved in a brilliant move before Mitch nipped in to round the keeper and slot the ball into an empty net. It was all Middlewich and on 50mins it was 6! Matt Thompson sent over a bullet of a throw into the area and it was flicked on to Houghie just 8yds out. The ball sat up beautifully and he thumped it past the helpless (and fed up) Holmes Chapel keeper. Both Chris and Mitch have been in great goalscoring form this season and it was fitting that they couldn't be separated at the end with 17 goals a-piece. Kieran Barratt in goal was a spectator for the most part (although he did pull of one superb diving save late on) but he could do nothing about Holmes Chapel's consolation goal, a real sweet strike from about 25yds out that flew in.
It really could have been double figures and Jake Ellison was unlucky on more than one occasion. Whilst the forward players grabbed the headlines, the lads at the back were rock steady and never gave the visitors a sniff of a chance. Robbie Evans and Joseph Ronalds had very tidy games and Matt, Luke McEnaney and Stephen Lynch were all totally dominant in the middle against some half decent attackers.
This was the best performance of the season and it was great to see the lads relaxed and enjoying their football with smiles on their faces. The boys have improved more this season than in any previous year and credit must go to Colin, Shaun, Mike and Chris for bringing them on the way they have. Well done fellas, and lets look forward to a great weekend in Cleethorpes in 7 weeks time!
That's all folks.....
