The last game of the season was on the billiard smooth 'green' , Woodley's home at Stockport county's training ground, on probably the nicest pitch Middlewich have played on this year a noon kick off was in order so people could watch the FA cup final later in the day.
Such an early kick off seemed to have a detrimental effect with players from both sides looking like they had been woken too early.
Middlewich eventually woke up and Dean Clarke's shot after 20 min's awoke Woodley, a minute later it was Stu Tulloch's turn this time to more effect his shoulder to shoulder run with a Woodley defender saw him then round the keeper to fire home to out Middlewich 1-0 ahead.
Woodley were next having to defend from the other side, Johnny Edwards run and cross goal pass unfortunatly not being met by anyone.
Defensively Middlewich where never really worried, Shaun Came is nearing full fitness and is now very commanding as a centre half and with Chris Jump,Lee Jones and Steve capper at his sides the defence is now starting to look better and more of an effective unit.
The half time talk must have included something as The witches came out brighter, this time with Johnny and Stu combining for Stu to weave around the Woodley defence and slot home his 2nd, it wasn't all one way traffic, Woodley made opportunities at the other end but were ineffective in completing the moves and the frustration showed, not in any bad tempered way as we have seen at some games, more the players complaining and language having to be cooled by the ref from time to time. the other factor in this game was the rain, after a glorious week of sunshine, it started to rain, the pitch was slippery and everyone was glad to get in at the end, not before the points were sealed by Dean Clarke though, Steve Warburton had been working hard down the right but tired legs meant that he had a harder time against his marker, but his breakthrough and cross into the area for Deano to bundle the ball in was reward enough.
So after 49 games 4 cup competitions and two items of Silver the season was over, Middlewich where top of the league on goal difference but Styal had to come to Woodley on Monday night in a game that could win them the title.. we had 48 hrs to wait..
